Ethane (C2H6)

What is ethane gas?

Ethane (C2H6) is a colorless, odorless, flammable gas. Ethane is the second most abundant hydrocarbon that is found in natural gas (after methane).

Uses of ethane gas

There are several uses of ethane gas. In stripping plants, ethane is typically included in the methane manufactured for pipeline transmission. In this case, nitrogen is added to the mixture to maintain the heating value per cubic foot at a controlled level of about 1000 BTU.

In the larger petrochemical manufacturing industries, however, ethane is sometimes separated from the natural gas stream and produced via a separate network of pipelines as a feedstock for the production of ethylene.

Cylinder quantities of high-purity ethane are often used in many aspects of polymer synthesis, due to the simplicity of converting ethane to ethylene. Ethane is likewise frequently applied as a specialty refrigerant.
