The Use of Liquid Nitrogen in Laboratory Research

Our more than 150 PurityPlus® partners at 600 locations nationwide have been supplying liquid nitrogen for laboratory use from our earliest days. What makes this commodity so desirable in so many types of laboratory applications – particularly as a refrigerant – is its ability to maintain temperatures significantly lower than the freezing point of water.

We’ve already described the use of nitrogen in food processing. In its compact, readily transportable liquid form (which doesn’t require pressurization), we supply it across the country for such laboratory applications as …

  • cryogenics – encompassing the production and study of low temperature extremes and the behavior of materials at such temperatures;
  • cryonics – the preservation of biological tissue (blood, reproductive cells, surgical samples, even human bodies) at extremely low temperatures in order to revive them and reanimate them at a later date; also as a means of cryoconserving genetic resources;
  • energy storage (serving as a medium for it);
  • making various scientific detection instruments operate with greater efficiency; and
  • effecting lower pressures in laboratory vacuum systems.

As a coolant, PurityPlus® liquid nitrogen is most notably used by the laboratories we serve …

  • to achieve superconductivity in high-temperature superconductors;
  • to maintain the liquid helium cooling systems of high-field superconducting magnets, including those used in nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers and magnetic resonance imaging systems, at a very low temperature;
  • in cooling baths and other testing situations designed to produce very low-temperature chemical reactions;
  • in vacuum-pump traps; and
  • in astronomy cameras utilizing CCD image sensors.

These examples, as far-ranging as they are, barely scratch the surface of liquid nitrogen’s use in the laboratory. Our customers quite often have their own, unique uses for it, just as they do for nitrogen in its gaseous state – which, of course, we also provide.

The fact is, more and more scientific, medical, and industrial research facilities across the country are turning to PurityPlus® for the nitrogen and liquid nitrogen necessary to achieve their research goals. They’ve found us to be a constant, ready source of these commodities. And they’ve come to depend not only on our having them when they need them, but also on their verifiable quality, our competitive prices, and the expert, personalized service they get from their local PurityPlus® Partner.
