The scoop on Liquid Nitrogen Dewars

Liquid Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, noncorrosive and nonflammable cryogenic liquid that is associated with the specialty gas Nitrogen. Because liquid nitrogen is noncorrosive, special materials for container construction is not necessary. Due to this, liquid nitrogen can be stored in various types of containers. Liquid Nitrogen is shipped in varying types of containers, depending on the amount being requested by the customer.

Dewars are one of the various types of containers utilized for liquid nitrogen. They can range in capacity from 5 to 200 liters. Some of the features of dewars include:

  • A pressure type liquid level gauge
  • Full tricock valve
  • Various relief devices
  • Insulation to for thermal efficiency

These features tend to make the vessels safer and user-friendly.

There are a few differences in some dewars, for example portable dewars must have a sturdy construction and casters and are intended for low-pressure transport. Most dewars come with a loose-fitting dust cap over the outlet to prevent moisture from the atmosphere from plugging the neck. This also allows the gas produced from the vaporized liquid to escape.
